Meet the New UAEYC Governing Board!


July marks the beginning of the new term for the UAEYC governing board.
As we start the new board term, we heartily thank Rhonda Dossett (Vice President), Mills Snowden (Treasurer), Rebecca Mikkelsen (Student Liaison Co-Chair), Mary Matthews (Student Liaison Co-Chair), Trevor Hicks (Northern Utah Member Rep), and Sally Schramm (T.E.A.C.H. Advisory Chair) for their service to UAEYC and to the early childhood education community over the past year.
We welcome Ilse Wilson (Treasurer), Debi Evans (Secretary), Kim Rice (Accreditation Co-chair), Leah Stanton (Northern Utah Member Rep), and Connie Wang (Public Policy Chair) to the board as they begin their terms of service.
Here are the UAEYC Governing Board members for the 2018-2019 year:

UAEYC Executive Board
Jared Lisonbee, President
Jared is the Research Analyst at Utah Community Action Head Start in Salt Lake.
Kathie MacKay, Vice President
Kathie is a faculty member in the College of Education at Brigham Young University where she teaches early childhood education courses.
Sheila Anderson, Past President
Sheila is a faculty member in the Department of Child and Family Studies at Weber State University.
Ilse Wilson, Treasurer
Ilse is the Owner of Fairyland Childcare Inc.in Sandy, the Alta Children's Center and Preschool in Millcreek. Ilse was featured in NAEYC’s Teaching Young Children she was also honored as the Provider of the Month by Childcare Aware of America for August of 2015, and was awarded that TLLCCF National teacher award in 2017
Debi Evans, Secretary
Debi recently retired as the director of the Murray School District Early Childhood Education Center after years of service in the Murray School District.

Connie Wang, Public Policy Chair
Connie is an Early Childhood Specialist for Care About Childcare at Utah Valley University.
Crystal Knippers, Membership Chair
Crystal Knippers is the Program Director at Care About Childcare at Weber State University.
JamieLynn Galloway, Accreditation Co-chair
JamieLynn is the Center Director at Bright Horizons at Overstock.com.
Kim Rice, Accreditation Co-Chair
Kim is the South Region Manager for child care licensing for the state of Utah.
Lynn Curtis, Development
Lynn is the owner of the Children’s Academy Preschool in Salt Lake.
Tiffany Parker, Historian
Tiffany is the Youth Program Coordinator and director of the Kids Camp and Childcare at South Jordan Fitness and Aquatics Center
Ana Cuenca, Hospitality
Ana operates Cuenca’s Learn and Grow Preschool in West Jordan.
Teri Henke, NAEYC Liaison
Teri is a faculty member in the Department of Child and Family Studies at Weber State.
Carolyn Christensen, 
T.E.A.C.H. Advisory Committee Chair
Carolyn stepped into the role of T.E.A.C.H. Program Advisor earlier this year and will continue as Program Advisor. She is the Adult Education Program Coordinator at Utah Community Action in Salt Lake.

Christina Pay, Eastern Utah Member Rep
Christina is the Education Coordinator at Care About Childcare USU-Eastern in Price.
Brittney Nelson, Southern Utah Member Rep
Brittney is a Preschool Coordinator for the Washington County School District in St. George.
Leah Stanton, Northern Utah Member Rep
Leah is a lead  Preschool Teacher at the Jewish Community Center in Salt Lake City.

Classroom Management Should be Easier than Herding Cats

By John Funk             Current research indicates that the two top factors in curtailing negative behavior in the classroom are nurturing positive relationships with the children and providing high quality supportive environments (classrooms). (1)             After years of supervising pre-service teachers, I understand fully how critical supportive environments are in our early childhood classrooms.  In the current collaboration between the University of Utah and Granite School District, we use the ‘Big 8’ format for classroom management. (2) Those eight strategies include:   Expectations:   Teaching and stating clearing the expected behavior.   Attention Prompts: Having signals or prompts to get the children’s attention.  (“When you hear the train whistle, stop and look at the teacher.”)   Proximity: Being close to the children (not calling across the room) when giving directions or encouraging positive behavior.   Cueing: Tied closely to expectations, cueing draws
